UNCLE JOHN TURNER, 1944-2007 [July '07]
"A benefit concert for Texas blues great Uncle John Turner planned for Wednesday at Antone's will now also serve as a celebration of his life," according to Michael Corcoran, who penned an obit in the Austin American-Statesman last Friday. The show gets underway at 7 p.m. on 8/1 at Antone's and will include performances and remembrances by Johnny Winter, Tommy & The Leftovers starring Tommy Shannon, Barry "Frosty" Smith, Malford Milligan, Mike Keller, Carolyn Wonderland & Cole El Saleh, Alan Haynes, a Blues Power Reunion, and more... The event will honor the blues legend, as well as educating public on health issues through a number of local orgs like: Sims Foundation, the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians and the Liver Foundation of Central Texas. For more on the Austin benefit from News 8 Austin's Andy Langer & Margaret Moser of the Austin Chronicle, click here.

UNCLE JOHN TURNER LEAVES BEHIND MUSICAL LEGACY [July '07]
The Port Arthur News is reporting the death of Uncle John Turner, Johnny Winter's original drummer, and whose Austin band Krackerjack featured Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar. Austin musicians, including Carolyn, had been scheduled to play a benefit on 8/1 @ Antone's, to help cover medical expenses associated with complications brought-on by hepatitis C. The benefit shows planned statewide will go on as scheduled, per Paul Orta. See also here. For more on this sad day in Texas music and the legacy of Uncle John Turner, click here and here.

EUROPEAN TOUR CONTINUES [July '07]
It's the last week in the EU, and the band is primed for the final shows on 7/28 with CW Band and Ginger Leigh @ Maloe Melo in Amsterdam and 7/29 with CW Band and Ginger Leigh @ Huis Verloren - in Hoorn. On 8/2, the band returns to the Saxon Pub in Austin at 8 p.m.

Elsewhere, the Houston Press recently revisited "Ten Years After -- the 1997 Houston Press Music Awards." It's a fascinating, if opinionated, look at where Houston music was in the waning years of the twentieth century, as well as where it appears to be headed. Give it a look.
